Ode to the Muse
It is important to acknowledge the people and influences that have made you the person you are. Constructing this set allowed me to control the individual parts of my life that, until now, have been in control of me. A porcelain doll is a stand-in for the perfect childhood that I have longed for, growing up with an abusive father. The many flowers and leaf garlands are representative of the Garden of Eden, which ties in my religion and faith that are important to me. The antique piano and two-century-old book of sheet music portray the central focus of my life as a classically-trained professional musician. As an artist, I am heavily influenced by Greek and Roman sculpture, architecture, and folklore, as seen by the use of doric, column-based pedestals, and also by my model, who represents Calliope, Muse of Poetry and Music. The muses in Greek Mythology are different from the gods in that they are spiritual guides that evoke the power and knowledge of the arts on the people that follow them. My model, as Calliope, is a stand-in for my mentor, whose patience, guidance, and friendship have sculpted me into the artist you see now. So much of the person I have become is because of her presence in my life… She is my muse.
